Cardiological real-time low-dose imaging system (CARDIS)

Cel

The main goal is to implement a new Medical Imaging System to be used in a Nuclear Medicine environment, complete with a dedicated radio nuclide generator. The target is a device able to perform clinical analysis in real-time, in cardiology and oncology branches to minimize the radiation dose received by both patients and medical operators and to have the capability of performing successive analyses in a short time interval. The system will use the Tantalum-178 with a half life of 9.3 minutes, to be compared with 6 hours of Technetium-99m widely used in standard crystal gamma cameras. The new system, the related methodologies, and its clinical use start from the results of a previous European project undertaken by some of the partners during the years 1997-1998 focused on development of a new detector, a Multi-Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) for applications in Nuclear Medicine.
