Improved striga control in maize and sorghum

Cel

Striga species are parasitic weeds of tropical crops such as maize and sorghum and they are one of the most serious causes of crop losses in Africa. The roots of the host species of Striga excrete chemical stimulants that evoke germination of Striga seeds. The proposal aims to elucidate and exploit the central role of GS in the interaction between crop and Striga. This will be achieved by a number of different approaches, such as an inventory of existing Striga avoiding cropping techniques, experiments under controlled conditions and in the field, and a biochemical and molecular analysis of GS production. The data will be integrated into a crop growth and Striga population dynamics model and a resistance management strategy designed. Results of experiments and model explorations will be evaluated using farmer participatory methods.
