Data Mining and decision support for business competitiveness: Solomon European Virtual Enterprise

Objective

The goal of this project is to enhance competitiveness and find new business opportunities in the global IT market by establishing a virtual European enterprise composed of companies and research laboratories with highly specialised expertise in two IT areas: data mining and decision support. The established Sol-Eu-Net enterprise will be organised as a flexible business structure made of cross-organisational, time-focused, task-driven work teams. It will work towards enhanced usage of data mining and decision support in industry, businesses and public services, contributing to improved quality, efficiency and effectiveness of their operations. This will be achieved through specific solutions to end-user problems, prototype project workshops, project monitoring and consulting, collaborative work and combination of problem solutions, as well as through education, training and spreading information Web-based information source.

Objectives:
There are three main objectives. First, to enhance competitiveness and find new business opportunities in the global market, a business model of a virtual European enterprise composed of companies and research laboratories will be developed, to synergistically merge European expertise in two IT areas: data mining and decision support. This will result in an operational international IT network enterprise, boosted by this project, employing new technologies and new internet-based methods of collaborative work. The developed model might be considered as a showcase for future more business-oriented European Networks of Excellence. Second, new educational and training methods will be developed, intended also for end-user and expert team training, including specialised problem-oriented seminars and prototype project workshops. Third, research advances in data mining and decision support will be achieved through partners' involvement in collaborative problem solving of end-users problems. Methods for combining problem solutions and consensus building will be developed, failed and successful approaches will be analysed and disseminated, thus contributing to the better understanding of generic methodologies. In addition, a novel methodology will be developed, combining data mining and decision support for problem solving.

Work description:
The established Sol-Eu-Net virtual enterprise will work as a fishnet organisation, which is flexible and will form and re-form varied patterns of connections. Based on the rationale that teams, not hierarchies, do the real work, the traditional hierarchical organisation will only have a limited, internal role. To achieve such functioning project partners will build upon their experience in 3rd and 4th framework projects and networks, one of which was co-ordinated by the co-ordinating partner of this project. The Internet and methods for collaborative work will be used to support the collaboration in this European virtual enterprise. Sol-Eu-Net will work towards enhanced usage of data mining and decision support in industry, businesses and public services, contributing to improved quality, efficiency and effectiveness of their operations. This will be achieved by solving end-user problems, organising prototype project workshops, project monitoring and consulting, and the use of new methods for collaborative work and combination of problem solutions. In order to solve end-user problems, project teams will be formed from experts with complementary skills and tools. The most challenging part will be the organisation of team work in the development of solutions for industrial data mining and decision support problems, organised as tasks with a responsible team co-ordinator, dynamically selecting partners and methods of work, and establishing Web documentation on the problem and problem solution. Such a Web repository of past solutions will contribute to spreading the experience and providing guidelines for future solving of similar types of problems. Enhanced awareness of the utility of data mining and decision support will be achieved also by organising education and training activities and spreading the information on the latest developments in the field through a Web-based open information source.
