UK Design House consortium for MST Take Up Action

Ziel

The objective is to increase the use of MST in companies throughout Europe, by offering design expertise plus access to manufacturers. Personnel will be offered direct access to 4 MST design organisations in the UK, plus one technology broker who will extend the service to Europe. All work is then directed towards companies, from initial contact with potential customers through advertising and events, visiting companies to ascertain their requirements, and then preparing a proposal for those wishing to proceed. In some instances a proof of concept will also be carried out. There will be at least 40 proposals delivered, and 10 proof of concepts. The latter will assist in proving the feasibility of some products for particular applications, 20 design contracts are expected as the quantifiable results of the programme. Links to 4 manufacturers in Europe will also be established, and proven with demonstrators.

Objectives:
The overall objective is to increase the use of Microsystems technology (MST) in companies throughout Europe, by offering design expertise plus access to manufacturers. In order to help stimulate the take-up of MST, personnel within Industry will be offered direct access to design experts to help them. Within this consortium the aim is to help companies through Concept, Feasibility Study, Design and Prototype and then demonstrate access to manufacture. In order to achieve this the consortium has set a number of clear, detailed objectives throughout the 2-year programme.

These are:
.Define the companies who may benefit, and define the design expertise/products on offer;
.Make contact with personnel in those companies and help define the product which would suit their application - Prepare a proposal;L%.Demonstrate the feasibility of the product being proposed.

Proof of concepts and 4 demonstrators proving manufacturing processes will also be completed. The objective is to become self-financing as a consortium.

Work description:
All partners offer MST design expertise across a range of products and processes. The work proposed involves all partners contacting potential customers, and working with them to help them define the product. The ultimate goal is to achieve MST design work from new clients. The workflow is clearly defined, and comprises preparing a business plan, making initial contact with potential customers, visiting companies to ascertain their requirements and subsequently preparing a proposal for those wishing to proceed. In some instances a proof of concept will also be carried out before the customer places a contract for the MST design work. Also, some proof of the manufacturing process will be undertaken. The initial awareness raising will be done by mailing literature, advertising on the WWW and pro-active searching. Those companies with an interest will be visited to establish their requirements. The design partner will then prepare an outline proposal, giving details of the technology, the design work required, plus costs and timescales. There will be at least 40 proposals delivered to organisations. Some that have highlighted a technical or commercial risk, which requires further investigation before the full design project is implemented. The customer will share the cost of a proof of concept, which has been allocated the equivalent of up to 20 days of work. It has been assumed that 10 proof of concepts, will be carried out over the 2-year project. Whilst not all of these will result in design contracts, they will assist in proving the feasibility of some products for particular applications. Design contracts are the quantifiable results of the programme and a conservative estimate of 25 contracts has been put into the work plan. In most contracts, prototyping is also expected to be included and carried out by a consortium member. In 4 cases the route to manufacture will also be defined using a generic design developed by the design partners, and produced by the manufacturing partners Sintef, SensoNor, Tronics and Morgan Matroc.
