Obiettivo CHEM will build flexible and integrated software allowing advanced and specialised software tools to collaborate to improve operations in refining, chemical and petrochemical processes. The aim is to : use information available on industrial plants, avoid unscheduled shutdowns and abnormal situations and determine optimal states and how they can be reached. Advanced Decision Support System will be a synergistic integration of new software tools for process monitoring, data and event analysis, and operation support developed in Europe and world-wide. A methodology will be proposed so that new supervision applications can be easily developed on various processes. Considering the economic loss and damage due to abnormal situations, the project will have large impacts on economy, safety and environment protection. It will improve working conditions by helping operators in daily work and increasing level of knowledge of the process.The 23 toolboxes addressed by the project and dedicated to the tasks listed before are available. A methodology defines how the different toolboxes that were developed can be used individually and together so that, in the future, new supervision applications can be easily built on different processes. An integration platform was built for allowing easy communication between the toolboxes. It was validated on CHEM toolboxes and can be extended to other software tools. It relies on an information model, which allows the sharing of information in an XML form. XML, Message Oriented Middleware, Corba, Java are being employed jointly with G2, a commercial proven platform for developing complex industrial applications. The platform allows interfacing with commercial plant databases and process control software. The toolboxes and sets of toolboxes integrated with the platform, were tested at pilot plants and industrial sites including a FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking), a paper making process, a gasifier pilot plant, a steam generator, a blast furnace and distillation process (Corus) and a CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) process.
