Weight reduction for safer, affordable passenger cars by using extra formable high strength austenitic steel

Objective

Lightweight, safe and affordable passenger cars reduce emissions and strengthen competitiveness of the European automotive industry. Therefore, the most promising materials are the optimized austenitic stainless steel grades EN 1.4301 and EN 1.4318 which have high strength and extra formability superior to new HSS, DP, TRIP, Al and Mg. The extensive use in modern cars has been limited by a lack of sufficient manufacturing knowledge. The present consortium of 9 partners from 6 EU countries including three car manufacturers will prove the materials potential and feasibility for crash relevant and chassis parts. Expected results are 40-50% weight reduction of replaced parts, passive safety increase, optimized manufacturing technologies and guidelines for mass production. The implementation of the results will be done during the project or latest 1-2 years after the project. The results will be extended to applications for rail and road transportation industry.
