Photonic Integrated Circuits using Crystal Optics

Ziel

The explosive growth of the Internet has led to unprecedented bandwidth requirements in the telecommunications network. As a result, there is a need for new advanced technologies that can enable the high-speed processing of this exponentially growing data traffic. PICCO proposes high contrast photonic microstructures on a wavelength scale as a novel technology that will recast our notion of waveguide integrated optics and lead to truly high density integrated circuits in Photonics. PICCO will demonstrate ultracompact, wavelength selective and wavelength converting elements and underpin their design by sophisticated CAD tools. We will study photonic crystal/photonic wire based components such as straight waveguides, bends, couplers and splitters and establish the most suitable material system (GaAs or SOI) to implement these. We will also develop a novel monolithic wavelength converter based on these generic components. Finally, PICCO will assess the feasibility of fabricating these devices by deep UV lithography, thereby offering a route to mass-manufacturing highly complex yet low-cost opto-electronic components.
