Obiettivo The aim of this work is to create an epidemiological basis for forecasting and controlling the diseases of winter oilseed rape crops across Europe. The output from this project should allow a reduction of the negative environmental effects of modern agricultural practise through reduced fungicide input. Objective 1.To investigate the effects of temperature and wetness on germination of UK and Polish L.maculans and P.brassicae ascospores. Controlled environment/in vitro study (January2001 - June2001).Objective 2. To compare infection conditions for ascospores of Polish and UK L. maculans and P. brassicae. Controlled environment/in planta/microscopy study (April 2001 - November 2001).Objective 3. To Study the effects of environmental and host factors on the spread of UK and Polish L maculans P. brassicae from leaves to the stem. Histological/in planta/microscopy study (July - December 2001).Objective 4. To write up advice for farmers in refereed scientific journals. (August 2001-December2001). Results obtained from experiments, concerning the choice of the optimal term of controlling the pathogens and the reduction of fungicide application in agriculture practice, will be written up and submitted to peer- reviewed scientific journals. Understanding the effect that different weather factors have on disease progress will allow mathematical models to be developed. Models will predict the risk of light leaf spot or stem canker and will allow decisions to be made regarding fungicide treatment.
