Obiettivo The TPEG project aims to contribute to obtaining a widely-acknowledged technology assessment of the TPEG specifications (Transport Protocol Experts Group, a suite of open specifications for the provision of relevant and focussed Traffic and Traveller Information across all modes of transport) submitted for standardisation to CEN (and ISO).To bring this technology soon to the market, major consumer electronic manufacturers will, within the project, jointly develop, test and validate a platform-independent TPEG software decoder for future digital radio receivers (initially DAB), also used to dynamically link TTI with navigational systems used in cars. Objectives:The main objectives of the TPEG project are:- Test and evaluate the use of the open TPEG-protocol applications which are bearer independent and which will offer single-point TTI message generation to multiple bearers and facilitate full service and network vectoring, including seamless cross border use;- Show how the existing TTI broadcast infrastructures may be adapted to support the language independent TPEG-Road Traffic Message application which serves the widest range of end-user products (e.g. navigation systems with a digital road map, PCs, simple information products without a location database) wherever the end-user may be;- Aid and accelerate the standardisation process;- feeding back results to CEN, by developing a 'service chain guidelines for implementation';- Create immediate market opportunities for enhanced pan-European multi-modal TTI services and products from the extensible, emergent TPEG applications (such as Public Transport, Status and Travel Time Information).Work description:The work will be organised in five Work packages:WP 1: Project management:Deliver a smoothly run beneficial informative project for the benefit of Europe and the IST programme;WP 2: Definition of test environment:Define the testing procedures by evaluating the whole information chain from message origination, processing, routing, broadcasting, reception and end-user presentation and define requirements for message encoding & decoding;WP 3: Assessment and Verification:Implement TPEG within existing broadcast infrastructures and realise the whole information chain from message origination, processing, routing, encoding to broadcasting on DAB and Internet and then test the functionalities for all possible options of the TPEG service. Reach industry consensus on TPEG decoder and produce platform independent TPEG decoder software module, implement geographical location referencing; and adapt all this then to receiver products. Carry out receiving tests in the validation areas;WP 4: Guidelines and Standardisation:Provide Guidelines ready for service implementers for the start of a fully operational TPEG Traffic and Travel Information services. Achieve early coherent standards that allow smooth integration with existing TTI services;WP 5: Dissemination and Implementation:Provide information on the plan for dissemination of the project results, describe the technology used and indicate the exploitation of project results expected by the project partners. The major test and validation areas are:Germany: Munich, Stuttgart and other parts of Germany;Sweden: Stockholm and large parts of the country;United Kingdom: London and large parts of the country;Worldwide: Internet.Milestones:The standardisation process will be accelerated and consensus within the whole industry interested in using the upcoming European TPEG standard will be established.Infrastructures for TTI message generation, processing, exchange and distribution to end-users will be elaborated for TPEG covering all modes of transport.A large group of major manufacturers will collaborate to develop, test and validate jointly a platform-independent TPEG decoder in Java, and thus ready to be used in navigational systems and more simple receivers, both without the need to use any location referencing database.
