Objective

COMUNICAR project will develop two vehicle demonstrators (a city and an upper class car) integrating a new concept of multimedia HMI (Human Machine Interface) able to harmonise the messages oncoming both from the traditional on-vehicle information (e.g. tachometer, etc.) and the new functions for the driving support (e.g. ADA systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lateral and Longitudinal Control, Collision Warning, etc.; Telematics services such as navigation, traffic and weather information, distance diagnostic, messaging, Internet, etc.; other information concerning Comfort and Entertainment such as CD and MP3 player, DAB, DVD, Climate control, etc.).

Project will develop the development of an appropriate HMI able to manage all simultaneous input/output messages to improve drivers' comfort and safety by increasing drivers' alertness and reducing the workload during the driving task. The HMI design and development will take into account ergonomic requirements and user needs. For this reason a number of laboratory, on-driving simulator, and on-road human factor tests will be performed.

Objectives:
The objectives of the project are: to assess the driver information need; to define which driving support functions (e.g. traditional information, ADA systems, etc.) produce useful information for the driver and which is the best way to give the messages, taking into account the workload and the different environment conditions and traffic scenarios; to design, develop and test an easy-to-use multimedia HMI using innovative interaction elements; to promote the standardisation of the designed information layouts and to investigate all the measures to encourage the exploitation of multimedia HMI.

Work description:
The first step of the work will be a set of surveys to define the user information needs, the multimedia technology state-of-the-art and the ways to ensure an easier interaction between user and on-board information System. The results will be the basis to design a multimedia HMI: an on-board information system that defines how, when, where and in which format to give the messages to the driver.

The HMI will be composed of an Information Manager dedicated to manage the information flows and the priorities as well as the address of signals for the input/output devices. The Information Manager will be also able to identify the driving scenario and the environment status according to a set of ad-hoc sensors. It will have a network architecture to exchange all data and it will manage a set of input/output devices included in the multimedia HMI and connected with the multimedia network. There is also an electronic unit that measures drivers' level of activity due to the primary driving task (this unit will be joined with the Information Manager).

The multimedia HMI will be tested in the laboratory during the virtual prototyping phase and on the driving simulator when the prototype, based upon the results of the previous test session will be available. The further step will be the on-vehicle integration of the multimedia HMI in the two car demonstrators. The prototypes will be validated in on-road tests.

Milestones:
The first result concerns user needs and multimedia technologies state-of-the-art. Then the project will define multimedia HMI specifications in terms of layout, interactional design solutions, etc. On the basis of the defined specifications, a multimedia HMI virtual prototype will be delivered and tested. The next main result will be the multimedia HMI prototype. Driving simulator test will be carried out while the two car demonstrators will be developed. The final tests will assess the usability of the integrated multimedia HMI.
