Multifunctional Automotive Radar Network

Obiettivo

This project aims at three main objectives. First, a new 77 GHz GaAs MMIC based chipset for FMCW radar systems will be developed.
Second, a multifunctional radar network will be realised consisting of precisely synchronised near-distance and far-distance sensors to be developed based on the new chipset.
Third, prototypes of such radar networks will be integrated into several experimental cars to prepare the realisation of following new safety and comfort systems: urban collision avoidance, collision warning, airbag pre-crash warning, stop and go functionality, and parking aid. Experimental results will be provided for all three objectives. The new safety systems will be validated in real traffic situations.

Objectives:
The objective of this project is to develop a new type of low cost radar network for automotive applications and to prepare the realisation of first applications: urban collision avoidance, collision warning, stop and go functionality, airbag pre-crash warning, and parking aid. The development of a multifunctional radar network for the realisation of different automotive applications will significantly reduce production costs, facilitate fast system development and reduce time-to-market. The new systems will improve safety of future vehicles with benefit for passengers and other road users. Co-operation of universities, radar systems manufacturers, semiconductor manufacturers, automotive suppliers and car manufacturers from five European countries is the best basis to develop and exploit these new applications. The project will strengthen the competitiveness of European semiconductor, automotive supplier and automotive industry.

Work description:
Within this project new safety related intelligent vehicle functions will be developed that require radar network functionality to achieve significantly better radar performance compared to existing sensor concepts. The development of a new 77 GHz GaAs chipset for the radar network, the development of sensors and radar network as well as the development of new applications including their validation are the major issues of this proposal. The objectives of this project will be achieved in several phases. At first vehicle functions will be developed in detail, requirements for the radar network will be derived, which will be the basis for the specification of the overall system, radar network, near and far distance sensors, sensor synchronisation, RF modules and GaAs MMIC chips. Simulations will support this work. Based on these results and the existing 77 GHz ACC sensor, new wide beam near distance sensors and far distance sensors will be developed. Two identical near distance sensors will be combined in a first step of radar network to proof the concept of sensor synchronisation, thus proofing the general technical concept of this project. Next, a complete radar network consisting of four near-distance and one far-distance sensors will be realised. By applying sophisticated multi-lateration techniques and sensor fusion algorithms, the high radar performance necessary for unambiguous situation interpretation will be achieved. Finally, prototypes of radar networks will be integrated into experimental cars. Warning and/or control strategies for each of the new features will be developed and optimised. In order to ensure an effective project all technical phases are supported by assessment and evaluation tasks. Work is also planned for dissemination and implementation of the technical results achieved in this project.

Milestones:
Definition of requirements for the radar network and the technical concept.
Experimental results on the system design concept, MMIC, RF module and sensor development as well as twin sensor configuration.
Experimental results for a complete network including all necessary signal processing.
Four experimental cars each being equipped with one prototype of the different new automotive features.
Development of the technology implementation plan.
