Tiltrotor interactional aerodynamics

Tiltrotor interactional aerodynamics

Objective

A sophisticated mach scaled, half span wind tunnel model of a tiltrotor will be developed and tested. The resulting database, a "first" for Europe, will allow to validate interactive aerodynamics codes in order to:
a) enable designers to accurately predict the efficiency of Tilt Rotor surfaces (fixed/rotating) and other rotorcraft configurations (conventional helicopter, compound)
b) by deeply investigating interactional phenomena in different flight conditions, provide high quality test data to increase the designer's knowledge in this field.

This is invaluable for the launch of a flying demonstrator, the intended follow up of the 2GETHER TP clustered with this project (like the TILTPROP and ASCOT CTPs). Economic benefits for EU manufacturers will derive from future helicopter designs and by being able to enter the promising tiltrotor market.
