Synchrotron radiation source

Ziel

Description:

The Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) is a world class facility dedicated to the exploitation of Synchrotron Radiation (SR) for fundamental and applied research. It is a 2GeV electron storage ring, routinely operating at high circulating currents (>250mA) and long lifetimes (>24 hours). The SRS typically provides from 5,000 to 6,000 hours per year of user beam with outstanding stability and reproducibility. SRS offers a large mix of experimental facilities, which deliver radiation with wavelengths extending from the infrared to the hard X-rays.

There are five insertion devices: four hard X-ray super conducting wigglers, with a total of 15 available experimental stations with 1 more in development, and a soft X-ray undulator with one station. An additional 15 stations use radiation from bending magnets, making 31 fully supported stations working simultaneously. Techniques available include X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy (XAFS), small-angle/wide-angle scattering, soft X-ray spectroscopy, photoemission, and imaging. More information will be found on the SRS WWW page. Work on the stations is supported by well-equipped support laboratories for sample preparation and access to auxiliary off-line instrumentation. EU-supported applicants will have access to all SRS stations. Access Provided: The contract provided for a minimum of 200 station-days for EU-supported applicants.

Application:

Full details of how to apply for beam time can be found through our web pages at http://www.dl.ac.uk/SRS/. The main criteria for access will be scientific excellence, stimulating new and exciting research and encouraging new users, especially from countries with no comparable facility. Short experiments will be favoured in order to maximise the number of users given access. Calls for proposals are announced twice a year, typically in April and October, through advertisements in Nature. An international panel of scientists will review proposals.
