Synchrotron cosy

Objective

Description:

The Cooler Synchrotron COSY, located at the German national laboratory Forschungszentrum Juelich, provides unpolarised and polarised proton and, in the near future, deuteron beams with beam moment a ranging from 300MeV/c to 3.45GeV/c. Due to the beam cooling properties, experiments with high precision can be performed. COSY provides sufficient energy to cover the associated strangeness production physics. Several internal and external experimental areas are available which are presently equipped with different spectrometers operated by international collaborations.

Magnetic spectrometers are installed which allow in combination with tracking devices the reconstruction of the 4-momenta of charged ejectives with high accuracy. Due to the limited solid angle these devices are the optimal tools for threshold studies in different channels. Also non-magnetic spectrometers are in operation, which cover nearly the total solid angle even for high excess energies. Multi particle final states can be studied with very high detection efficiencies. In the frame of this EC project research groups with accepted proposals have access to the research facilities free of charge. The three facilities COSY, FZ-Juelich (Germany), AGOR, KVI Groningen (The Netherlands), and CELSIUS, TSL Uppsala (Sweden), cooperate as the Light-Ion Facility Europe (LIFE).

Application:

Scientists interested in performing research at COSY are asked to contact the Project Manager or the Scientific Coordinator, Professor K. Kilian (same address)
Tel: +49-2461-615943, e-mail: k.kilian@fz-juelich.de. The COSY Program Advisory Committee (PAC) evaluates research projects in sessions in May and November each year. In due time calls for proposals will be published in Nuclear Physics News International and Europhysics News.
