Grosser wellenkanal (gwk) - large wave channel

Objective

Description:

The research facility LARGE WAVE CHANNEL (GWK) of the Coastal Research Centre (FZK) is one of the largest facility of its kind worldwide (309 m long, 5 m wide, 7 m deep). It is used for large-scale experiments on research topics related to Coastal and Ocean Engineering. In the past research has been performed on coastal structures (dikes, breakwaters, revetments), offshore structures (cylinders, pipes) and wave-induced sediment transport (dune erosion, shoreline protection). Wave heights up to 2.0 m can be generated with a maximum water depth of 5 m. State-of-the-art wave generation and absorption control are available including irregular and freak wave generation. This also includes state-of-the-art measuring and recording instruments, data acquisition, processing and analysis systems. The EC supported Transnational Access (in action of the Improving Human Potential Programme) has started on 1st. of March 2000 and has a duration of 3 years. The offered total amount of access for the full period is 30 experimental weeks and the number of individual users who will benefit from this access is estimated to 36.

Application:

Interested researchers are invited to submit a letter of interest or an one-page proposal to the Coastal Research Centre (FZK). After reception the potential users will receive further detailed information in order to discuss details of the proposed research project. A feasibility check with further discussions should lead to a final proposal, including the model-set-up, measuring techniques, test procedures and access time. The final proposals will be peer-reviewed once a year by an User Selection Panel which will be composed of independent external experts and facility experts. This Panel will recommend a shortlist to be submitted to the EC for approval. The selected users will be invited to visit the facility in Hannover for a training course and for final discussions on all details of the access and the proposed investigations.
