Cel Objectives:The project combines Large Scale Facilities in the synchrotron/FEL and laser sectors, complemented by independent research laboratories, to create the most advanced User Facility for combined soft x-ray and laser light, opening up completely new possibilities for European users. The objectives of the project are the development and test of(i) a flexible, high-power laser system,(ii) a precise synchronization with the free electron laser (FEL), and(iii) a user interface to combine the two photon beams for pump-probe experiments, in order to exploit the intense soft X-ray pulses from the FEL for time-resolved measurements down to t he level of the pulse width, i.e. a few hundred femtoseconds. Results:The work has focused on the development of the optical laser and the precise synchronization with the FEL. A Ti:Sa seed-pulse oscillator has been synchronised with the RF master oscillator. Work is under way to reduce the phase noise from presently 2 ps to 200 fs. Another short-pulse oscillator has been locked to the M AX II storage ring. This allows for work in producing an exact timing signal between the soft-X-ray laser and the optical laser. Complementary work has been don e for using a fast streak camera to control long-term phase drifts and for developing know-how in absolute phase measurements. The pump-laser for the OPA has been commissioned and delivers 0.5 kW pulse trains at 1047 nm wavelength. A new diode-pumped actively-modelocked laser oscillator for the pump laser with improved long-term stability has been developed and tested. An OPA configuration has been successfully tested using the new pump laser. Further work was done on transport and diagnostics of the FEL photon beam preparing the design of the user interface.Project Manager: Josef Feldhaus Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor HASYLAB Notkestrasse 85 Hamburg 22603 GermanyTel: (49-40) 89983901Fax: (49-40) 89984475E-Mail: josef.feldhaus@desy.de.The work has focused on the development of the optical laser and the precise synchronization with the FEL.
