An innovative and low cost controller for Home Cinema environments

Obiettivo

INHOME Trial Action aims at the acquisition of modern subsystem technology by the user (coordinator) partner. The project will concentrate on the customisation of an advanced core processing subsystem (based on ARM CPU, DRAM, Flash, FPGA and embedded software) and its integration with a power line access module for the realization of a new product for controlling Home Cinema and Home Control environments. The same core subsystem will be used for the design of a remote touch panel unit for user interaction with the central controller. The main business sector of the coordinator is the development and marketing of high quality loudspeakers as well as audio processing hardware modules. The acquisition of modern system and subsystem technology will provide the company the capability to design and develop complex systems for a new and rapidly exploiting market. Of key importance is the technology transfer to the user.

Work description:
In this project the user and the technology supplier will integrate an existing core processing subsystem along with a power line access module for the design and development of an advanced system and a remote unit for Home Cinema environments control.
The technical context and main objectives of this project are:
(1) The design and development of a new product prototype for an advanced Home Cinema and Home Control system.
(2) The design and implementation of remote touch panel peripheral unit based on the same core processing subsystem.
(3) The integration of a power line access module for exchanging control messages over the power network of homes.
(4) The customisation of the core subsystem to fit specific needs.
(5) The acquisition of expertise in systems and subsystems methodologies.

The system will be the centralised controller for controlling specific Home Cinema environment appliances using the home power line network as the communication medium. Overall, the system has to react to user commands within 5 msec, process in real time the data received from its interfaces, offer a full bandwidth RS-232 port and concurrent control of appliances. The proposed controller will demonstrate the capability of controlling up to 32 K devices within the household. Finally, concurrent operation of applications will be possible. The touch panel performance is also important since it has to process user interface graphics in real time. The target price of the controller is 600-700 EUR while the touch panel unit is 800-900 EUR that is less than half (due to the power line use) comparing to competition. In order to achieve the above main objectives, the project will place particular effort and emphasis on the tools to be used as well as on the technology transfer of the new technology to the user.

Milestones:
4 main milestones during the 18 month project:
(1) System requirements and specs,
(2) system architecture and high level design,
(3) Customization of core and implementation of hardware,
(4) Units integration.
Main results:
(a) modern systems and subsystems technology transfer to the user.
(b) Development of the centralized controller and the remote touch panel for Home Control.
(c) Increase of coordinator technical capabilities and extend its market to a new sector.
