Ground Probing Radar for Subsoil Service Detection

Objective

Our main objective is to develop a reliable high-resolution tool for detecting services in the subsoil with non- destructive surface measurements. This is achieved by designing and manufacturing a new radar apparatus, a suitable acquisition procedure and a radar image processing system. The radar will be able to span a frequency band from 1.0 to 2.0 GHz. It will be able to detect targets down to a 5 m depth and it will resolve objects as small as 0.05 m in diameter. The acquired radar image must be processed in order to obtain the morphological (shape of the subsoil objects) and geophysical (material of the objects) information that is useful for subsoil service detection. This new innovative product is obtained by using and adapting a subsystem dedicated to acquiring a radar image of the subsoil.

Objectives:
This project aims at developing a Ground Probing Radar for Subsoil Service Detection (GPR-SSD). GPR-SSD will be able to acquire the bi-dimensional radar image of the sub-soil and, after image post-processing, it will be able to show to the End-User the location and size of subsoil services, i.e. cables, metallic and plastic pipes, concrete blocks, holes, rocks, etc. The main use of the system is the fast subsoil investigation needed before digging in urban environments. Currently similar products do exist, but they are not specific to subsoil service detection, are less convenient to use, and more expensive. The technological advancement represented by GPR-SSD is made possible by using and adapting a subsystem dedicated to acquiring a radar image of the suboil.

Work description:
The main technical work packages are:
- WP1 to define requirements and design of the system. A market study is also performed.
- WP2 to adapt the OE-FM subsystem into the IRUT subsystem. The main work here is on antennas and RF Front-End, while firmware should not change. This WP is mostly performed by LG Elettronica.
- WP3 to develop the software on the supervisor PC, including the interface with IRUT and especially the Image post processor. This WP is mostly performed by GP- TECNO.
- WP4 to integration the whale system and test it. This WP is led by GP- TECNO, with the collaboration of LG.
The other workpackages are dedicated to supporting activities: dissemination, measurement and evaluation, management.

Milestones:
M1: System requirements and system design for the new GPR-SSD product are available and validated.
M2: The IRUT subsystem is available.
M3. The Software supervisor (including the image post processor) is ready and validated.
M4. The GPR-SSD product is ready.
