Centre for design and structure in biology

Objective

Description:

The Infrastructure offers access to its installations in the field of structural biology. As far as NMR is concerned, this includes 185 man-days of access to the three high resolution spectrometers (Varian INOVA 750, 600 and 500) including100 man-days computing, the 500 MHz instrument also being equipped for solid-state studies. The (automatic) crystallization and X-ray diffraction facilities, including two rotating anode generators and three area detectors, will be available for 225 man-days including 100 man-days computing. The electron and high-end light microscopy installations for 210 man-days being equipped with transmission electron, field emission scanning electron and scanning probe microscopes, including 33 man-days computing, as well as a video- enhanced and a fluorescence microscope. 22 man-days will be available at the CDSB synchrotron DESY Hamburg, (starting January 2001). For sample preparation, facilities for gene expression, including a microbiology laboratory with a 10l fermenter, are available within the Centre. Isotope-labelled proteins can be expressed, and labelled oligonucleotides can be synthesized in vitro using T7 RNA polymerase. Proteins and nucleic acids can be purified using one of three FPLC or two HPLC machines as well as isoelectric focusing and other standard equipment. Finally, up to 15% of the state-of-the-art computing resources of the Centre will be available for the users. Access will be provided free of charge to designated user groups and this will include infrastructural, logistical, technical and scientific support. The Infrastructure also offers practical courses for users who are not experienced in one or more of the techniques available for structure determination.

Application:

Proposals can be submitted anytime from research groups out of the member states and associated states of the EC. A call for proposals is published twice a year in "Nature" and in "Nature Structural Biology". Proposals should contain a short description of the work that is to be carried out at the Infrastructure, as well as the names, nationalities and places of work of the researchers expected to take part and should be sent to the Infrastructure Manager. Proposal forms are provided at the CDSB home page. After receipt the proposal will be checked for its technical feasibility. Thereafter the User Selection Panel will select proposals on the basis of scientific merit. Priority will be given to user groups who have not previously used the Infrastructure and who would not normally have access to it.
