Objetivo EMU offers significant benefits to all participating Member States. The 'cohesion' countries and less-favored regions of the other Member States are likely to benefit particularly through improved economic development prospects but risks have been identified for less competitive economies. All Euro zone members may have regions sensitive to these effects and adjustment to the post-EMU policy environment may have consequences for economic and social cohesion. In the absence of other policy instruments it is supply side adjustment that is going to have to bear the burden of adjustment in EMU. This AM will review and synthesize research (from TSER and 5th Framework projects and other sources) on the impact of EMU on cohesion and the potential for supply side adjustment. This work will be disseminated via a briefing paper and a high-level workshop, and contribute to the research agenda of the 6th Framework Programme.
