Social Aid Interactive Developments

Cel

SAID is meant to develop a set of telematic services for the elderly to aid the work of Social Assistants by means of Digital TV infrastructure, intelligent Software Agents and Mobile phone information services. The objectives are not only to provide basic social services as they are conceived today, but also to extend the ambit of social support to the new demands appearing in the 21st century in two areas: provision of basic care services remotely and making possible access to the IST for the elderly. The first objective is accomplished by means of an open platform based on Digital TV, where a configurable number of services can be provided depending on the specific needs: videoconferencing, surveillance, alarms, entertainment, household services, etc. The second one will do extensive use of Autonomous Agents technology to implement personalised assistants able to act as information provider, reminder, shopping assistant, etc.

Objectives:
The objective of SAID is to develop an innovative Social Assistance infrastructure for: more efficient social care for the elderly, improved services and the possibility to get access to the IST for a sector of the population that has been absent up to now. SAID has two faces: for the elderly it will implement a mixed computer / personal based environment where he will be given the opportunity of self care while he has the possibility of 24h aid when needed. For the Social Assistant it will mean a complete set of tools that allow him focus efforts on the most needed problems that result in more efficient work in terms of time and cost. SAID will support the following services under the DVB-MHP digital TV platform: Video Conferencing, alarms, surveillance, personalised assistants (shopping, reminder, info. searcher), household, entertainment and education.

Work description:
The project involves research and development efforts in three fronts: novel developments for digital TV, research in the area of Intelligent Agents (meant to implement personalised assistants adapted to specific user's characteristics), new approaches for oversimplified user interfaces, mobile information access and data management;
- In field of digital TV, efforts will be focused on the integration of a set of varied telematic services under the umbrella of Digital TV. The system will be using the STB/TV set combination as the unique front end for the user making possible the integration of a complete set of advanced services for unskilled users at home. Digital TV developments will be based on the new emerging standard DVB-MHP;
DVB-MHP will provide the means to build portable (PC/STB) applications and transparent integration of different communications media: satellite, cable, Digital terrestrial TV;
- By means of Autonomous Agents technology, we intend to implement a multi-layered network of agents able to carry out a set of specific tasks in an autonomous / distributed fashion so that they are able to provide personalised services to the users. We will explore several paths: adaptation to specific needs, learning, efficient information exchange, cooperation between agents, automatic information retrieval;
- In the field of information management, we intend to address the problem of intelligent access to data bases, mobile access to information, intelligent planning resources for Social Assistants, real time control over a complex network of users. The project will contribute to a set of de-facto or formal standards in the respective fields: DVB-MHP, Java, XML, WAP, etc. The system will be demonstrated by means of two prototypes based on satellite and cable TV.

Milestones:
- To integrate the MHP/Open TV Digital TV infrastructure necessary for the implementation of the Telematic services proposed;
- To develop the distributed client side of the application based on autonomous agents and oversimplified interfaces;
- To develop the control post composed of the database system, console interfaces, and WAP based mobile information infrastructure;
- To implement a pilot application to test the system under real conditions.
