The consortium will develop and demonstrate the applicability of new magnetic materials required for advanced magnetic recording devices utilizing bit storage in the sub-100nm range. These materials will be composed of well-defined particles produced by research-level processing techniques which are highly developed in laboratories throughout Europe. The project will combine experts in a range of techniques to study films in environments ranging from isolated atomic clusters in ultra-high-vacuum to densely interacting assemblies in industrial materials. The objective is to develop a sufficiently good understanding of these materials that will enable their design from first principles. This will be demonstrated by making samples of high performance films and devices. The research will provide generic support to existing magnetic industries.
