Objective

A group of European institutions will evaluate high burnup MOX fuels irradiated in light water reactors and fast reactors using JEF nuclear data file together with state-of-the-art neutronics codes. The discrepancies between measured and calculated nuclide inventories will be analysed using sensitivity studies. From the combined results of these studies, trends in basic nuclear data will be inferred by the various participants and intercompared, with special emphasis paid to minor actinides and fission products.
Recommendations for improving those data will be derived and forwarded to the JEF file Project. From the conclusions of this validation, safety limits of MOX fuels in terms of helium production in LWRs and steel cladding dam age rates in fast reactors will be re-assessed.
