Objective

This project is targeting an extension of a currently active IST project dealing with personalisation issues. The extension will rely on the development of intelligent and automatic audiovisual stream management tools, both from the content provider and from the final consumer points of view. We will integrate the innovative management of multimedia contents offered by different providers together with a personalised access to this information through universal multiplatform interfaces, taking advantage of existing standardisation efforts on MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 and delivering the contents through UMTS terminals and conventional e-learning Internet portals.

The main objectives of this project will be:
- Definition of a customisable architecture for the development of personalised services for multimedia contents.
- To develop generic components for such an architecture, and to use current standards to implement the interfaces among these components.
- To customise and adapt background agent based technologies directed towards personalisation aspects of multimedia retrieval, as well as to extend these technologies to Universal Multimedia Access technologies.
- To specify, implement and install 2 personalised services, which demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed framework in 3 different scenarios: conventional PC Internet interfaces, digital TV and UMTS cellular terminals. Where needed, GPRS developments will be used as an advance to UMTS services.
- To evaluate the generic architecture and the pilot applications in end user trials.

Objectives:
PERSEO will target multi-channel and ubiquitous access to various content delivery services. This application framework will require a deeper research and development of technologies and applications on both sides of the audiovisual stream handling and management, as well as a more personalised service to the common citizen. These technologies will have to be implemented on both ends of the information stream taking special care to include them within a common framework, and being able to deliver the information through a multichannel environment (referred in this document as Universal Multimedia Access -UMA-), specially focusing to advance the use of UMTS services in Europe.

Therefore, the main objectives of this project will be:
1. Definition of an architecture for the development, customisation and integration of personalised services for integrated multimedia content.
2. To customize, integrate and adapt background agent based technologies directed towards personalisation aspects of multimedia retrieval, as well as to extend these technologies to universal multimedia access technologies like UMTS, Web TV or traditional WWW access.
3. To specify, implement, customize and integrate two personalised services.

Work description:
In order to provide personalised universal multimedia access services to a domestic and non-expert end user, new tools for content providers have to be created for information analysis and indexing, for automated trailer generation and summarization, for audiovisual parsing, and for specific search and browsing tools.
These tools have to be integrated into an multi-agent based architecture that permits end-users to access all the delivered information in a personalised fashion.
Autonomous intelligent software agents will be used for it. Their role in the current project will be to act as a personification of the end user in the system, interacting with the system in order to provide personalised multimedia information to the end-users based on the user's dynamical profile. The delivery of multimedia data will also be personalized by taking into account the channel bandwidth and device capability terminal that the end-user is using to access the information. In order to provide this functionality, MPEG-7 will extensively be used by the autonomous intelligent software agents, being therefore one of the goals of PERSEO to contribute to the definition of consolidated and new MPEG standards (e.g., MPEG-4, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21).
It is worth to mention that exploitation activities will be very relevant for the commercial success of the project. Market analysis will be accomplished very early in the project and the results obtained will be continuously evaluated through the project extension in order to provide a closed focus of project objectives.
The workplan has been designed for a duration of 24 months. Development activities will start soon after specification stage and will carry on until month 19. After the final integration stage, the core of the system will be ready by month 18. The pilot applications should be finished by month 21. A final testing period of three months has been selected.

Milestones:
1. The PERSEO generic architecture, including tools for content providers, end-users and standard mechanisms to deploy it into specific applications.2. Two pilots centred on different environments:
-A content provider application able to manage multimedia contents
-A domestic end user pilot, offering multichannel delivery and personalisation capabilities, tested over two delivery channels: a learning portal offering multimedia assets, and a UMTS interface through third generation mobile phones
