The use of fungal inocula in agricultural applications such as biodegradable mulch films and planting pots

Objective

The development of biodegradable products originating from renewable resources has offered alternatives to synthetic products. However, products such as starch plastics are susceptible to biological attack making them not suitable for long-term applications. In the case of mulch film or plant pot the strength of the material is rapidly declining. The properties depend on the weather conditions. Recent advances in biotechnology have resulted in renewed attention for the use of fungi in agriculture. A number of fungi have been described as candidates for biological control agents. The proposed RTD work focuses on the development and commercialisation and the implementation of fungal inoculate in agricultural products, such as mulch films and planting pots. The incorporation of fungi during the production of these products will be studied to ensure the appropriate activity needed to obtain the right lifetime of these products during their use. The use of the envisaged products will lead to the reuse of agricultural resources and a reduction in waste and toxic chemicals. This will result in a significant decrease in production costs of the end-user such as tree nurseries.
