Advanced Long-distance Learning Education System

Objective

The project aims at creating a multimedia based system for advanced and specialised second language self-learning, what it is called Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP). The system is thought for English, German, Spanish and Catalan. The resulting product will be constituted with the following five tools:
1. A learning tool for listening comprehension;
2. A learning tool for reading comprehension;
3. A learning tool for writing;
4. A learning tool for speaking;
5. A supporting tool for linguistic description. Contents in each module will be pedagogically conceived. The system will perform an assessment of the user's output by relying on linguistic analysis in combination with other language engineering techniques, which have been already tested.

Objectives:
The overall objective of the project is the creation of a multimedia-based system for advanced and specialised (LSP) second language self-learning (ALLES), constituted of four different learning tools (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking) and a support tool on linguistics. From the technical point of view, the objectives that should be achievable within the project are the following:
1. Didactic design and establishment of the contents in each working module, since their independence from each other could cause inconsistency as regards the conception of the acquisition progress;
2. Development of the language engineering tools that is necessary to evaluate the tasks done by learners and gives them feedback.

Work description:
The work plan in ALLES is divided into three main blocks:
1. THE DIDACTIC WORK: It is constituted by WP1 to WP 6 and is devoted to the achievement of the first objective seen above. On the one hand, the didactic design of both the overall system and the acquisition sequence in each particular tool. On the other one, the establishment of the contents of the learning tools;
2. THE LANGUAGE ENGINEERING WORK: It includes WP7 to WP11 and is concerned with objectives 2 and 3. Work in this block consists in adapting already existing tools in natural language engineering, so that the analysis of texts and exercises produced by the learners can be performed in an appropriate way, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, it is devoted to the development of the linguistic resources that have to fulfil these tools;
3. THE GENERAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE SYSTEM: It includes WP12 and WP13, which are concerned with the overall architecture of the system and the user's interface, respectively, providing the assembling of all the implementation work done in the project. There is also a small fourth block (WP14) concerned with the testing of the end product. In addition, three horizontal WPs are foreseen, devoted to the management (WP0), the documentation \(WP15\) and the dissemination \(WP16\).

Milestones:
The first milestone (month 3) is accomplished with the establishment of the general design of the project. The second one (month 18) is marked with the obtaining of the first body of materials from WPs related to the didactic block. A general evaluation of the project results is foreseen in month 30, while month 33 is marked with the documentation. Last, month 36 marks the end of the project. The expected result is the creation of ALLES, the Advanced Language Long-distance Education System.
