The development of novel spider protein derived implants and devices for orthopedic surgery

Obiettivo

This project aims at launching an entirely new concept for development of new biomaterials for medical use. We aim at developing techniques for biosynthesis of large quantities of spider silk protein, which will be modified and refined and used as a raw material for the production of orthopedic devices. The genes for silk protein will be cloned and expressed in different systems. The expressed proteins will be characterised with respect to structure, biocompatibility and biomechanical properties When the final product has been achieved it will be used to produce orthopaedic devices as
(i) external fixators and casts as well as
(ii) internal fixators as pins, screws and plates.

In a second phase spider protein implants, as bone grafts, ligaments and tendons will be developed. All products will be subjected to animal trials prior to clinical testing.
