Gnss - inertial future landing techniques (GIFT)

Objective

An "all weather landing system" only based on satellite positioning (GNSS/GALILEO) would need to have a very complex architecture for ensuring the required level of safety, having no cost interest compared to current ILS or MLS systems. On the contrary, preliminary developments have shown that combining the satellite positioning capabilities with other onboard navigation sensors (inertia, air data, altimeter) simplifies the overall system in such a way that it can become competitive compared to ILS or MLS. More over, it offers new operational capabilities, such as various approach trajectory. GIFT project proposes to study and evaluate an augmentation system, which will hybridize GNSS with other on- board sensors, and deliver a positioning information allowing precision approach and landing. It includes aircraft architecture study and hybridization algorithms design, performance evaluation in auto land simulations, and in-flight evaluation.
