Obiettivo The objective of the project is to develop CFRC materials and components for use in car brake systems by Selection and investigation of suitable CFRC materials with a lower content of carbon fibres and treated with additives. Development of samples and components with integrated friction pads. Characterization of the material including tribological testing. The economic interest of the project rests in the opening of the large automotive market for CFRC material. The objective of the project is to develop carbon fibre reinforced composite (CFRC) materials and components for use in car brake systems by:selection and investigation of suitable CFRC materials with a lower content of carbon fibres and treated with additives;development of samples and components with integrated friction pads;characterisation of the material including tribological testing. The manufacture of prototype components of brake pads and brake discs of different carbon carbon C/C materials supplied by the partners. The brake pads were tested on a friction tester under varying conditions, regarding the friction properties, mechanical wear and the influence of additive as well as postimpregnation on these properties. A cast iron brake disc is employed as a standard and the conclusions are listed below. There are oxidation problems primarily at the outer surface of the pad.The additive titanium nitride in a carbon carbon composite homogenises the friction properties and raises the cold friction coefficient, but catalyses the oxidation at elevated temperatures. The impregnation with polymers lowers the porosity, reduces wear and homogenises the friction coefficient, while lowering its value. The contact pattern during braking is not complete enough. The heart transfer is too high (overheating of the brake fluid). The first 3 points require further material development while the latter 2 require an adapted system (eg new back plates for brake pads).THE PROJECT COMPRISES THE FOLLOWING PHASES: - SELECTION AND INVESTIGATION OF SUITABLE CFRC MATERIALS WITH A CONSIDERABLY LOWER CONTENT OF CARBON FIBRES AND TREATED WITH ADDITIVES. - DEVELOPMENT OF SAMPLES AND COMPONENTS WITH INTEGRATED FRICTION PADS. - CHARACTERISATION OF THE MATERIALS INCLUDING TRIBOLOGICAL TESTING. THE ECONOMIC INTEREST OF THE PROJECT RESIDES IN THE OPENING OF THE LARGE AUTOMOTIVE MARKET FOR CFRC MATERIAL.
