Bioprocessing of sewage sludge for safe recycling on agricultural land

Obiettivo

Modern society is producing large amounts of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. Disposal routes are primary incineration, land filling and recycling on agricultural land. The last option is very appealing environmentally and socio-economically. However, minor concentrations of potential toxic organic compounds (xenobiotics) are found in sewage sludge. This is a special public concern as these toxic compounds may have a potential for toxicity or carcinogen sis. We will develop sustainable methods for bioprocessing sewage sludge for reducing the content of xenophobic compounds and make eco- and plant-toxicological and socio-economic evaluation of sewage sludge recycling. BIOWASTE is expected to suggest economically feasible and technological reliable bio processing solutions for constituting safe sewage sludge recycling on agricultural soil.
