Objective The fungus Ganoderma causes a number of diseases of tropical perennial crops and Ganoderma stem rot of oil palm is the single major disease constraint to oil palm production in Asia and Oceania. There have been considerable advances in research for the control of Ganoderma diseases in the last 3 years, particularly in the fields of disease recognition and surveys, epidemiology and bio control. These advances are of particular importance to the development of planting, sanitation and breeding programmes. An International workshop is planned to enable dissemination of the research advances among researchers and stakeholders from both the Asia Pacific region and Europe. The workshop will be held in North Sumatra to ensure availability to relevant workers in the region, and the proceedings will be published in order ensure their free distribution. The workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of information, and the establishment of a collaborative regional research network.
