IMPROVEMENT OF WEAR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF STEELS EVENTUALLY IN AGRESSIVE MEDIA BY ION IMPLANTATION

Objective

The objective of this programme is to improve the wear resistance, possibly in agressive media, of two steels in common use: a stainless steel and a high speed tool steel. The industrial applications which are concerned are: mechanical pieces working in primary medium of PWR mechanical pieces working in chloride envirnoments (e.g. sea water) forming tools (for cutting, punching,...etc.) For that, we use a new suface treatment, ion implantation, which presents numerous advantages. Each specific application needs an optimization of the implantation conditions and a characterization of the tribological behaviour of the material and of its corrosion resistance in the case of the stainless steel.
Ion implantation has been tested as a surface treatment for improving the wear and corrosion resistance of steels for 3 different applications. The association of titanium and carbon implantation is beneficial for the tribological behaviour of the M2 high speed tool steel. Ball on disc tests have shown a decrease in the friction coefficient in (100 C6 on M2) or in (alumina on M2) contacts by a factor of up to 75% for example in the latter case. The iron titanium carbon amorphous phase formed at the surface by titanium or titanium plus carbon implantation is responsible for this improvement.
The study conducted in chloride solutions shows that in propagation conditions occurring in occluded corrosion cells, molybdenum and zirconium implantations have beneficial effects on anodic dissolution of 304L stainless steel. The action of nitrogen seems also to be effective in crevice situations, probably in initiation conditions. However to withstand fretting corrosion, molybdenum implantation appears the most attractive due to the action of molybdates that may be formed during the initiation stage.
Carbon, nitrogen and chromium plus nitrogen implantations have been performed in the 304L stainless steel in order to get good wear characteristics and to reduce oxidation kinetics when used in a primary circuit nuclear medium. A hardening effect of the surface is effectively observed in all cases of implantation. Tests in autoclaves at 360 C have shown a decrease in the oxidation phenomenou in the case of the chromium plus nitrogen treatment, whereas carbon and nitrogen implantations are less effective.
TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON COMMONLY-USED MATERIALS FROM THE TWO MAIN FAMILIES OF STAINLESS STEELS (AUSTENITIC AND MARTENSITIC) AND ON A HIGH-SPEED STEEL.
- CHOICE OF IONS FOR IMPLANTATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF IMPLANTATION CONDITIONS.
- OPTIMIZATION OF IMPLANTATION PARAMETERS
- DETERMINATION OF THE WEAR AND CORROSION PROPERTIES OF THE SURFACES OBTAINED
- THE SURFACE PROPERTIES OF THE IMPLANTED LAYERS WILL BE DETERMINED BY A MACHINING TEST WITH A FINELY ADJUSTABLE LOW-SPEED CHIP BREAKER FRICTION COEFFICIENT. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA WILL BE APPLIED TO THE CHOSEN TEST, I.E. TAPPING.
THE TASKS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AS FOLLOWS:

INPL-LYON I:
DETERMINATION OF OPTIMUM ION IMPLANTATION PARAMETERS, TREATMENT OF PHYSICAL DEPOSITS BY ION IMPLANTATION, SURFACE ANALYSIS BY X-RAY AT GRAZING INCIDENCE AND BY NUCLEAR METHODS (RBS AND NRS), MONITORING OF THE IMPLANTED LAYER DURING WEARING TESTS.

UNIREC:
COMPLEMENTARY ION IMPLANTATION TESTS ON TEST PIECES FOR ANALYSIS AND ON PROTOTYPES FOR INDUSTRIAL TRIALS, DETERMINATION OF FRICTION, WEAR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF THE IMPLANTED LAYERS, FRETTING CORROSION AND MACHINING TESTS, ANALYSIS OF IMPLANTED LAYERS BY LDS AND TRANSMITTED-LIGHT MICROSCOPY.

CEBELCOR
TESTING OF RESISTANCE TO LOCALIZED CORROSION WITH OR WITHOUT ABRASION, ANALYSIS OF DEGRADATION PROCESSES IN CONJUNCTION WITH ION IMPLANTATION PARAMETERS.

FRAMATOME:
SUPPLY OF MACHINERY (THREADING TAPS AND BROACHING TOOLS FOR MACHINING AND FRICTION GEAR FOR TUBE EXPANSION MACHINE), MACHINING AND TUBE EXPANSION USING TOOLS "IMPLANTED" UNDER OPTIMUM CONDITIONS, ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF THE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS, ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF THE IMPLANTATION PARAMETERS ON WEAR IN THE TEST PIECES AND ON THE QUALITY OF TUBE EXPANSION.
