Objetivo In synergy with RTD Project GENEPI 1, a tissue bank, including lymphocytes and skin biopsies and a database will be created as essential infrastructure for present and future genetic research in the field of radiation protection and health. From normal tissues obtained from up to 2000 individuals (GENEPI-1) RNA,DNA and proteins will be extracted, frozen, catalogued and stored. Networking systems and IT for normalisation and storage of data in a central database, including gene expression profiles and a web-based information /access system will be established. Modern statistical tools and high throughput computational biology will be applied for multiplexed data processing and analysis. Protocols for use and access will be developed and ethical and legal issues addressed. The tissue bank will remain open for 10 years until tissues from at least 10000individuals have been collected. The overall aim of the project is to create & maintain a collection of frozen normal tissues from the participating partners in WP4 of GENEPI-1.This bank will serve as a source of biological material for determination of genes, proteins, and molecular pathways responsible for the variation of normal tissue response to radiation. The bank will preserve material such that DNA, RNA & proteins that can be isolated and applied to the recent and continuing developments in genomics, proteomics & bio informatics. This includes techniques such as DNA sequencing, expression profiling with micro-arrays, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) &mass-spectrometry protein analysis. In parallel an IT infrastructure linking the research institutes, including a web-based access & information system, will be developed and a database set up containing clinical, tissue & genetic data.
