Towards an Ecoefficient Functionalisation of White Phosphorus

Objectif

The proposed research project "Towards an Ecoefficient Functionalisation of White Phosphorus" is aimed at gaining a fundamental knowledge of the scarcely investigated chemistry of elemental phosphorus. This goal will be approached by studying the metal-mediated activation and functionalisation of white phosphorus. The experimental studies dealing with the stoichiometric, catalytic and electrocatalytic chemistry of P4, will be supplemented, when necessary, by mechanistic and theoretical investigations.

The collaborative research activities will be pursued to reach several objectives:
The development of the coordination chemistry of white phosphorus and related molecules.
The stoichiometric functionalisation of white phosphorus aimed at synthesising via chemical (metal-mediated) and electrochemical methods phosphines or other phosphorus containing species.
The development of an ecoefficient "chlorine free" process resulting in the catalytic and electrocatalytic functionalisation of white phosphorus.
The optimisation of the electrochemical and catalytic production of organic esters of phosphoric and phosphorous acids as well as of other organophosphorus derivatives of industrial interest.
As expected results of this research programme, we can foresee a robust development of the organic and organometallic chemistry of white phosphorus and an ecoefficient approach to the synthesis of organophosphorus derivatives directly from P4 with significant integration between the complementary expertises of the six partners participating in the project. The advantages, which can be anticipated from the successful accomplishment of the proposed "chlorine-free" approach, are the complete elimination of this noxious reagent from the reaction process and the development of innovative catalytic and electrochemical processes for the industrial production of organophosphorus chemicals from P4 with a very reduced environmental impact.
