Branes, superconformal theories in diverse dimensions and partial breaking of supersymmetry

Objectif

The main goal of the project is to understand in more detail the dynamical and group-theoretical structure of superbranes and M-theory and to clarify their relationships with superconformal theories in diverse dimensions, using the ideas of AdS/CFT correspondence, superembedding, higher spin theory, harmonic superspace and partial spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry.

It is planned:
to describe world volume dynamics, interactions with supergravity, intersections and anomaly structure of non-perturbative solitonic brane configurations present in String/M-Theory, by exploiting dualities and the superembedding approach;
to investigate mechanisms of (partial) spontaneous breaking of space-time supersymmetry due to branes, to construct and study the corresponding effective field theory models which exhibit this effect;
to construct new supersymmetric extensions of the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory and their nonabelian versions, to reveal their brane implications;
to study a superconformal phase of M theory with unbroken higher spin symmetries;
to classify superfield representations of superconformal groups in diverse dimensions and to study superfield correlators in superconformal theories for further checks of AdS/CFT correspondence;
to develop new approaches to calculation of effective action in supersymmetric theories using the deformation quantization method;
to construct a non-commutative version of the harmonic superspace, to study the quantum structure of non-commutative N=2,4 supersymmetric gauge theories in such a superspace.

The research activity will be carried out during 3 years starting from April 2001.

The main expected results include:
a feasible scheme of off-shell quantum calculations in N=3 harmonic superspace as applied to finding out the structure of n-points correlators of N=4 gauge theories in N=3 harmonic superspace formulation;
classification of the protected superfield representations of superconformal groups in diverse dimensions and the KK spectrum of the relevant AdS branes and bulk supergravities;
non-commutative versions of harmonic superspace theories and the corresponding quantum effective actions; the structure of the superconformal phase of M-theory and its relation to higher spin theories in diverse dimensions; the precise relationship between Goldstone superfield actions and Green-Schwarz type superbrane actions;
higher N supersymmetric DBI theories and nonabelian superfield DBI actions;
a universal S-duality invariant geometric description of superbrane systems including the KK monopole;
full supersymmetric actions for coupled supergravity-superbrane systems;
light-cone superfield formulation of D=10, 11 supergravities and the related branes;
analysis of the open membrane theory living on the world volume theory of the M5-brane;
new brane models associated with the exotic BPS configurations; the study of supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum scenarios and realization of supersymmetry in spaces with a boundary.

The results of the project should give a significant contribution to theoretical and mathematical physics and, quite possibly, will contribute to solving problems of applied interest.
