Objetivo The main objective of the project is to develop a generic information access system for high-latitude climate data, climate analysis, major climate events and numerical simulations of future climate change scenarios which will be disseminated to the public sector, governmental agencies, industry, media and the academic sector including education (CLIMAS).The project objectives imply six major foci of research:1. Substantiation of the architecture of the information system;2. Selection of data sets and establishment of databases for the system;3. Study of the methods for extraction of essential information from large data sets, data analysis and representation;4. Preparation of the information products for the system;5. Implementation of the prototype system;6. Demonstration and validation of the prototypeThe project team is composed of institutions capable of providing excellent expertise on the scientific and logistics issues: From Russia - the Nansen International Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (St. Petersburg), the Northern Water Problems Institute (Petrozavodsk), Saint-Petersburg State University, Scientific research Institute for Ecological Safety; from Germany - the Max Plank Institute for Meteorology, from Norway - the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (Bergen). These institutions have already a long-lasting and gratifying experience in scientific co-operation.Key elements of CLIMAS:- The proposal utilize various interdisciplanry climatic data sets and climate simulations which have been developed in other INTAS projects and EU/Climate projects.- CLIMAS will develop an electronic access system for climate data and information from previous projects available at NERSC and MPI. For example climate simulations over 100 - 200 years carried out by MPI, including prediction for the future, will be an important data set. With these data, the CLIMAS prototype will be able to show the predicted change in climate in any region. The long-term perspective is that all climatic data and information from all providers of climatic data is organised and made available through a single-entry system like CLIMAS.- Research focus is on tools for information processing. Input data will be climate data from observations or climate simulations, which includes prediction over the next 50 years. For example Principal Component Analysis, neural network methods for SAR image classification, wavelet analysis, will be used to extract essential information from large data sets.- Access to test data sets and related information will be implemented using databases, GIS, and visualisation methods. The expected research results contain:- an information access system for digital climate data and numerical simulations of the climate change scenarios which is useful for decision makers, public institutions, industry, scientists, education and media;- A prototype information system should be ready for demonstration at a workshop towards the end of the project, including overall evaluation of the project;- Summary information with illustrations will be made available for decision-makers, media and other non-experts, while full data sets, technical reports and detailed analyses will become available for science and education.
