Optical and radar ecological monitoring of near-Earth space environment for the control of technogenic pollution and natural hazard assessment due to asteroids

Cel

It is planned to unit leading scientists and technical facilities of the NIS and INTAS countries in order to fulfil the multi-faceted program of research of near-Earth space environment. It is expected that the coordinated monitoring by optical NIS stations together with regular working VLBI radar system (Evpatoria RT-70 planetary radar + LFVN international array of radio telescopes) will allow obtaining the topical information on space debris and population of dangerous asteroids (NEA). The unique statistical data on cm-sized and mm-sized fragments at LEO, GEO and HEO will be received. The modelling and experimental investigation of GEO satellite explosions and collisions will be fulfilled. The orbits of all NEA will be determined or checked. The largest in the NIS and INTAS countries databases on SD and NEA objects will be developed. The software packages on prediction of dangerously close SD fragments approaches with operational satellites and manned orbital stations, and assessment of asteroid hazard approaches in foresee future will be put into practice. As by-product the knowledge about movement parameters of the Earth group planets will be improved.

On the other hand, the project fulfilment will allow to elaborate the real-time correlation system, upgrade and keep in operation the unique radio antennas and optical telescopes of the NIS, promote the development of European service for research of near-Earth space, will be an integral part of Russian and European Space Debris and near Earth asteroids investigation programs. The new generation of young scientists and engineers of the NIS will be trained in all aspects of project researches. These works will support the leading NIS scientists in these hard times for NIS Science and allow to them to continue the high-level scientific research.
