Plasma creation, energy transport and smoothing of non-uniformities in volume-structured media irradiated by high-power laser pulses

Ziel

The project "Investigation of plasma creation, energy transport, and smoothing of non-uniformities in volume-structured media irradiated by high-power laser pulses" is devoted to the physics of interaction of high intensity laser fluxes with the low density (10-1 to 10-3 g/cm3) media, whose physical properties (density, structure and atomic composition) change in volume either stochastically (for a foam-like structure) or according to a regular law (celled or layered structure of solid elements or layers of gases). The objectives of the project are:
- the investigations of physical processes in these interactions
- search for the optimal conditions for the smoothing of energy deposition and for the suppression of hydrodynamic instabilities in the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) schemes
- search for the optimal conditions for the laser radiation conversion into x-ray emission.
Results of the previous investigations in this field, including those by the project participants, indicate that interaction of a powerful laser pulse with the foam creates a long-lived elongated plasma with a nearly uniform pressure distribution.
The expected results of the Project will be the following:
- to measure the spatial and temporal characteristics of non-equilibrium laser-produced plasmas from various types of the low density volume-structured matter (porous matter, porous matter doped with heavy element clusters and regularly layered matter);
- to determine experimentally and via numerical simulations the characteristic times of the homogenisation and of electron-ion relaxation, laser absorption efficiency and speed of energy transport in light and heavy element foam matter, as a function of target and laser pulse parameters;
- to determine experimentally the dependence of the thermal emission efficiency and of radiative transport rate on the mass fractions and sizes of heavy element clusters, atomic numbers of heavy elements in the laser-produced plasma of the doped low-Z foams;
- to demonstrate experimentally the suppression of the hydrodynamic instabilities in complex targets, containing solid and low density layers and in solid targets irradiated by special laser pulse with a pre-pulse;
- to develop a theory of the laser absorption and of the conversion of the absorbed energy to x-ray emission, of the relaxation processes, energy transport and evolution of the hydrodynamic instabilities in the non-equilibrium laser plasma produced from the volume-structured low average density media;
- to deduce recommendations for the design of high intensity x-ray and neutron sources.

The experimental research will be carried out by using the following four laser installations: "Mishen" (TRINITI, Russia, laser intensity ~1014 W/cm2 , pulse duration 3 ns, wavelength 1.06 (m, energy 100 J, one beam);
- "ABC" (E.N.E.A. Frascati, Italy, laser intensity ~1014 - 1015 W/cm2 , pulse duration 2.5 ns, wavelength 1.06 (m, energy 100 J, two beams);
- "PALS" (Institute of Physics, Prague, Czech Republic, iodine laser, pulse duration 0.4 ns, wavelengths 1.31 0.65 and 0.44 (m, energy 103 J);
- "PICO" (Lebedev Physical Institute, Russia, combination of 1-5 ns pulse duration with the energy up to 50 J and 2-3 ps pulse duration with the energy up to 1 J).
