Objective

The main objective of this project is to investigate possibilities of the creation of long-living non-equilibrium spin orientation in doped self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots, and to estimate the possibilities of their application in designing spin-electronic devices and quantum information processing. In order to reach this goal, it is necessary to investigate the processes resulting in the creation of non-equilibrium spin orientation and the mechanisms of spin relaxation in QDs.

It is planned:

1. To study the fine energy structure of excitons and trions and the peculiarities of the exchange interaction of carriers in charged QDs;
2. To investigate mechanisms of creation of non-equilibrium spin orientation in QDs by optical pumping;
3. To study spin relaxation of equilibrium charge carriers, electrons or holes, in doped QDs.

As a consequence of the research efforts listed above, the following main results are expected:

1) New information on the spin dynamics in charged QDs, including spin redistribution over the energy spectrum and spin quantum beats, will be obtained;
2) Characteristic values of the parameters governing coherent exciton and trion dynamics in QDs, including g-factors and fine structure parameters, will be found out and related to structural characteristics of QD arrays;
3) Spin relaxation times of equilibrium charge carriers in doped QDs will be measured with time-resolved polarization spectroscopies. The role of the hyperfine interaction in the electron spin relaxation will be elucidated.

Considering the international relevance of the team involved in the Project, it is expected that substantial achievements will be obtained in all the topics. The results will be presented under the form of one annual and one Final Project Reports, edited by the Project co-ordinator, and of publications in International Journals and communications in International Conferences, making mention of the support given by the INTAS Program.
