Objective The aims of this Project are the design, synthesis and comprehensive study of novel photosensitive receptors based on fluorescent and photochromic crown-containing compounds, which are capable of drastically changing their spectroscopic characteristics upon selective binding with heavy and radioactive metal cations. Crown compounds of four different types will be synthesized. It is supposed that the designed molecular systems will show both a high metal ion-binding selectivity and enhanced optical response to metal complexation. Solvent extraction studies will be carried out to determine the ion-binding selectivity of photosensitive receptors. For the purpose of development of optical ion-detecting sensors for environmental monitoring, the complexing, spectroscopic and fluorescence properties, and photochromic reactions of novel crown compounds will be studied in solution, in poly(vinyl chloride) matrices and in hydrogels based on poly(vinyl caprolactam). These studies will be carried out using NMR, UV/VIS absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved electronic spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Artificial neural networks-based analysis of the absorption or fluorescence spectroscopy data will be used to evaluate the concentrations of an individual ion in a multicomponent mixture. Results of these studies will be published in international journals and presented at scientific conferences. Application for patents will be made. The most important results will be included in the lectures for students and post-graduate students.
