The study of multiparticle correlations in ultrarelativictic heavy ion collision

Objective

Particular goals of the project are:

- to improve precision of extraction of pi0 and eta meson contents from two-photon invariant mass spectra, taken in high multiplicity environment of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

- to obtain first experimental yields and transverse momentum spectra of pi0- and eta-mesons produced in central as well as peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at an energy of 160GeV/nucleon;

- to obtain first experimental yields of neutral mesons of higher masses in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions from two- , three-, and four- photon invariant mass distributions, and, in particular, omega-mesons;

- to search for thermal and direct photon emission in Pb+Pb collisions;

- to search for effects of collective flow;

- to search for HBT-correlation effects in four-photon distributions;

- the data set of 30 million central events and of 20 million peripheral events of Pb+Pb collisions at an energy of 160GeV/nucleon taken by the WA98 experiment at CERN will be comprehensively analysed;

- the pi0 and eta yields and spectra in a broad p_t range will be determined with high precision by analysing two-photon invariant mass distributions, applying the mixed event technique and taking into account residual two-photon correlations due to multiphoton resonance decays;

- the heavier mass neutral meson yields will be evaluated by complementary studies of three- and four- photon invariant mass distributions as well as two-photon residual correlations;

- the collective flow effects in multiparticle correlations will be studied;

- the HBT effects in photon correlations will be studied;

- direct photon radiation will be searched for and studied or its upper limits will be found with a sensitivity about 5%.
