Development of an advanced light collection technology for new generation plastic scintillator counters

Cel

The main goal of the proposed Project is to develop a new readout technology for plastic scintillator counters using flexible wavelength shifting double cladded fibres. Optimisation of optical techniques for light transport, and improvement of radiation hardness of detectors are also main objectives of the Project.

These researches will be carried out while the High Energy Physics community prepares for the next generation experiments at the existing or future high energy colliders. The unique physics opportunities at frontier luminosity and energy may only be exploited through the development of innovative detectors. The proposed new technology has the potential to contribute scientifically to provide these experiments with more efficient counter systems.

The participating Laboratories have complementary roles and expertises to contribute to the Project, and would ensure on efficient management and realisation of it.

The proposed new light readout technology employing flexible WLS double cladded fibres to be achieved at relatively low cost, promises also a significant impact in several research fields - from physics to radiobiology and medicine - and a wide spectrum of practical applications, when the dose of radioctivity must be monitored. Substantial improvements in the sensitivity and resolution of medical diagnostic techniques might be possible.

It is foreseen that all the new technological results, achieved in this Project will be published in international scientific magazines, proceedings of international conferences and/or as internal notes of the participating Institutions.
