Objective Microalgal blooming in lakes and reservoirs that has become a problem of international importance will be subject to a comprehensive investigation by hydrobiologists of different countries. The final applied result of complete resolution of this problem is to understand the mechanisms of blooming to the extent that would allow to control the occurrence of blooms in particular waterbodies The major goal of the project is to comprehensively investigate the mechanisms of blooming of microalgae in inland water bodies on the basis of mutually complementing experiments performed on mesotrophic water bodies (Russia - Shira lake, Spain - freshwater Embalse de Santillana) and Lake Zurich (Switzerland). The lakes have been chosen as models of aquatic ecosystem prevailed by biological processes entailing blooming. The investigation of basic mechanisms that cause outbreaks of phytoplankton blooms and their role in exciting and sustaining blooming is a fundamental priority problem of water ecology.Since the key mechanisms can belong to different hierarchical levels, the scientific program includes: experimental mechanisms of blooming of dominant algal species;- investigation of population interaction of algae, zooplankton and bacteria;- flow chart of energy and matter in water ecosystems indicated - a prognostication model of dynamics of blooming, hydrological components (3-D currents) and hydrochemical components based on these observations and experiments--the proof of adequacy of mathematical modelling by comparing computer maps of blooming with pictures from satellites and observed data. Participants of the project have been organized in accordance of these topics.Expected results:1) experimental kinetics and peculiarities of each mechanism of blooming of microalgae;2) adequate ecological-hydrophysical model of Shira lake ecosystem with emphasis on blooming dynamics modelling;3) adaptation of this model to modelling the blooming in European water bodies reservoir Embalse de Santillana (Spain) and mesotrophic Lake Zurich (Switzerland);4) verification of the model on the basis of satellite information about surface distribution of chlorophyll; 5) scenario calculations and making efficient recommendations to reduce blooming. The obtained results will be published in high-ranking scientific journals and in popular-science literature, including mass media.
