Velocity shear induced phenomena in astrophysical plasma flows

Ziel

The present project is INNOVATIVE regarding both the subject of investigation and the method that will be applied, viz. the nonmodal approach. The physics of flows with spatially inhomogeneous velocity fields (shear flows), of a common occurrence in astrophysics, is still not completely understood. Canonical linear theory (the widely used modal approach) meets significant problems in some quite simple but important kinds of shear flows. The impressive progress in this field of investigation, achieved since the early 1990's, is associated with extensive usage of a so-called nonmodal approach. In particular, TWO NOVEL CHANNELS of energy exchange were found in linear dynamics of perturbations in shear flows. The first channel corresponds to energy exchange between the mean flow and disturbances. While the second channel ensures energy exchange between different modes of collective behaviour.

The main OBJECTIVE of the present project is a systematic survey of the velocity shear induced, energetically capacious processes in a wide range of astrophysical shear flows, where shear-induced effects may have a SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE on their observable characteristics. In this context the study of accretion disk flows, solar plasma flows, magnetospheric plasma flows in pulsars and jets will be tackled by a nonmodal analysis of linear perturbation dynamics.

The RESEARCH ACTIVITIES will include a thorough consideration of velocity shear induced phenomena in accretion disks, solar plasma flows, magnetospheric plasmas in pulsars, and jets. The intended theoretical study of the phenomena will be based on the nonmodal approach. Related numerical analysis and data processing will be carried out to analyse the obtained theoretical results, to demonstrate observational features of VSIP, and to compare them with existing observational data. Special attention will be given to peculiarities and concrete observational puzzles associated with these astrophysical objects
The EXPECTED RESULTS will provide us with NEW KNOWLEDGE about velocity shear induced essential energetic phenomena taking place in astrophysical flows (accretion disk flows, solar plasma flows, magnetospheric plasma flows in pulsars, and jets) and will help to interpret and clarify some of the yet unresolved observational mysteries related to them. The outcomes of these research activities will also have DEFINITE PREDICTIVE POWER and may be used for planning of further observational experiments.

The FEASIBILITY is guaranteed by the complementary expertise and the successful initial studies as evident from the recent (joint) publications of the project teams in some of the best international journals. The MANAGEABILITY is guaranteed by the already intense contacts between the different project teams and the experience on coordination in different European and National projects. The low demands on equipment of the present theoretical project and the ambitious objectives guarantee a HIGH VALUE FOR MONEY.
