Sound generation by wall turbulence and by elastic systems excited by wall turbulence

Obiettivo

The space-time structure of the wall turbulent pressure and shear stress fluctuations is to be investigated. A complete set of physical experiments will provide data on the correlation of these fields, random in space and time, which will enable the mechanisms of their generation to be studied. An analysis of wave features of wall pressure and of shear stress fluctuations, which are directly connected with organized (coherent) structures, will be performed. On the basis of the information obtained, the principal physical phenomena responsible for sound generation by an elastic system, excited by turbulent pressure and shear stress fluctuations and responsible for a direct radiation of wall turbulence, will be studied. The streamline noise propagation through the regularly stratified and turbulent atmosphere will be researched. The task on the shear stress contribution into sound and pseudo-sound generation in the case of finite elasticity of the streamlined surface will be solved: the principal equations will be derived, the analytical evaluation of their solutions and numerical modelling will be made.

The role of negative energy waves in the process of origination and evolution of coherent structures will be studied. Experiments will be carried out according to original methods using special quiet low-turbulent wind tunnels in which wide ranges of Mach and Reynolds numbers will be realised. Precision thermoanemometric and acoustic equipment will be used, as well as systems for the spectral analysis of processes, random in space and time. On completion of the proposed project, there will be a real improvement in the understanding of the physical phenomena related to wall turbulence and sound generation. The results to be obtained will be world leading.
