Combinatorial and geometric theory of groups and semigroups and its applications to computer science

Objective

The scientific objectives of the network are:

- to develop existing and to establish new links between the theory of finite semigroups and the combinatorial theory of groups;

- to study and to settle a number of computer science motivated problems in the theory of varieties of finite semigroups and finite groups;

- to investigate computational complexity of certain algorithmic problems in the computational theory of finite and finitely presented semigroups and groups and in the theory of finite automata, and to develop efficient algorithms for these problems;

- to coordinate efforts in implementation of new and existing algorithms within the framework of various computer algebra systems, in improving the interface between these systems, and in transferring the systems to new platforms.

The network will comprise 14 teams, 7 from the INTAS countries (Austria, France [2 teams], Israel, Portugal, United Kingdom [2 teams]) and 7 from Russia (Ekaterinburg, Moscow [3 teams], Saratov, St Petersburg, Vologda). The INTAS teams include leading specialists in semigroups, groups, automata and algebraic software. The Russian teams represent all major Russian schools in semigroup theory and include world-leading experts in group theory. There are many strong scientific links between team leaders as well as good personal contacts. The network therefore will be build on the top of existing collaboration. The Network Co-ordinator and the Principal Investigator are proved to be able to pull together and to lead a top quality international research network to outstanding results.

The network's aims will be achieved via a systematic exchange of ideas and scientific results. In order to organize and maintain such an exchange, both traditional methods (visits, conferences, workshops) and new ways based on the modern information technologies will be used. A special emphasis will be made on involving young Russian scientists in all kind of the network activity.
