Water Cherenkov detector of Pierre Auger Observatory (electronics part)

Objective

The experimental facility "Pierre Auger Observatory" (PAO) is constructed in the frame of International Collaboration, which unites scientists of 18 countries (including INTAS Member States - United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and others). The main objective of PAO is the study of the origin and nature of cosmic rays of extremely high energies via detection of Extensive Air Showers (EAS). These studies will allow to find the sources and to investigate the physical processes of generation of particles with energy above 1019eV.
The presented proposal is a part of international works on creation of "Pierre Auger Observatory". The project objectives are optimisation and creation of measuring system of PAO Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD).

Concrete project objectives are the following:
- To refine basic parameters of Front-End electronics for providing optimum operation conditions of such unique large-scale detector as PAO.
- To develop low power consumption Front-End electronics system with wide dynamic range.
- To elaborate methods, algorithms and software for testing and calibration of Front-End electronics in laboratory conditions and in long-term experimental investigations.
In the frame of the project, the development of the PMT Base/Amplifier and FADC boards for WCD electronics is foreseen. The PMT base supplies appropriate high voltage to each stage of the PMT, and couples the signals from the tube to amplifiers, which condition them for presentation to the flash ADC. The set of 8-bit flash ADCs with overlapping dynamic ranges will be used in each spectrometric channel for phototube signals digitisation. These electronics units will be integrated with Station Controller. The Station Controller and its software perform the trigger selection, respond to data requests from the Central Station of the Observatory, maintain calibration and housekeeping data, control high voltage and thresholds, and respond appropriately to error conditions.
The specific character of the physical tasks and the structure of PAO installation demand to solve a number of physical, technical and engineering problems. The co-operation of French, English and Russian groups forms a favourable condition for optimisation of measuring system of PAO Cherenkov water detector and for creation of pilot samples of Front-End electronics units in a short time. Unique experience of University of Leeds group in EAS water Cherenkov detector construction and operation, which was accumulated during experiments with Haverah Park installation, allows to form necessary demands to Front-End electronics system and to methods of their tests and calibration.

The electronics parameters refinement will be made on the basis of simulation results, obtained in College de France (CdF). The Station Controller and corresponding software, which are being developed in CdF, provide the possibility to tests Front-End electronics units as a part of real data acquisition system of WCD. The Russian groups (MEPhI, SNIIP, Prompribor) have significant experience of joint works on construction and exploitation of measuring system for WCD. The prototypes of Front-End electronics units for PAO Water Cherenkov Detector (preamplifiers and FADC boards) have been already developed and tested by Russian groups.
In the frame of the project, the Front-End electronics satisfying specific operation conditions of "Pierre Auger Observatory" will be developed. Methods, algorithms and software for monitoring and calibration of Front-End electronics will be elaborated and experimentally tested. The pilot batches of Front-End electronics will be manufactured and tested as a part of PAO Engineering Array. Besides, Front-End electronics for PMT signal time-amplitude processing in a wide dynamic range and low power consumption high voltage supply units, which will be created in the frame of the project, may be used in other physical and technical set-ups.
