Development and Production of AlN/TPG Spines for SCT Detectors for the ATLAS experiment

Objectif

The aim of the project is to develop the technology needed to produce a large number of mechanical baseboards (spines) for the ATLAS SCT forward modules using thermally annealed pyrolytic graphite (TPG) and Aluminium Nitride (AlN). Main research activities are the optimisation of the TPG production and annealing process to obtain the best compromise between thermal conductivity and mechanical rigidity. Furthermore precision machining of all components, assembly issues and quality control have to be studied. The production and test of complete detector modules using the spines is of great importance in order to verify the properties and the quality of these spines. The result of this program will be a component of the ATLAS forward silicon tracker that must satisfy all requirements as thermal conductivity, precision, mechanical rigidity, radiation hardness and possibility to be produced reliably in large quantities.
