Comparative analysis of methodology and design criteria for cryogenic turbopump inducers of launchers is conducted for improving design with focus on stability behaviour

Objectif

First objective of the 4 teams involved in the Project is to make clear the specific properties of each inducer design method used by respectively Russian, European, and Japanese designers. This objective will be reached by correlating ways of dimensioning and relevant geometries with effectively measured performances on steady and unsteady viewpoint. A first range of Q3D flow calculations will be helpful for this correlation.

Second objective deals with the research of valid hydraulic stability criteria. A second range of flow calculation will be carried out to find qualitative and quantitative relationship between some design aspects and the reported experimental behaviour of inducers. Dynamic models of cavitation behaviour will be used to detect both 1D and 2D hydraulic instability ranges.

Third objective will supply a first approach of new design method able to meet both static and dynamic performance requirements, taking into account the previous steps of the Project. A third range of more sophisticated calculations will be realized for some geometries chosen as targets.
That new method will obviously be submitted to specific needs and aims of the whole industrial launching process.

Fourth objective is designing, constructing and testing an inducer model taking into account, as far as allowed by time schedule, the research method and the predominant outcome of different steps of the Project. The test results will be helpful to give a feed-back effect on the improved design method.

Output of the Project deals with :

- further computational and experimental research steps;
- industrial applications for European and CEI launcher motors, with assumption of increasing international cooperation in the field.
