Influence of exo- and endo-derivatization of fullerenes on the properties of the materials formed at high temperature and high pressure

Cel

The purpose of the projected study is to compare the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the materials formed under the influence of high pressure from pure fullerenes, their endo- and exo-derivatives and mixtures of fullerenes with metal powder, mainly in the conditions within which the fullerene skeleton collapses. These conditions lie in the 800 K range at pressure higher than 3 Gpa.

First, the fluorofullerene compounds will be prepared and purified in Moscow. These compounds will undergo pressure treatments in Troitsk, in the same conditions than their metal-fullerene counterparts did. A preliminary study will then be performed to determine the hardness of the formed samples in order to guide the ensuing treatments.

The structural properties will then be studied in Tours and Paris by means of X-ray measurements and electron microscopy. Raman spectroscopy will also be used to determine the bonding between carbon and fluorine atoms and between carbon and metal atoms.
Transport properties of the metal containing samples (thermal and electrical conductivities as a function of temperature down to 15mK) will simultaneously be measured in Louvain. Conductivity measurements up to 1000 K will also be performed in Paris. As the metal-carbon bonding in endohedral compounds and mixtures, respectively, are different, differences in these properties are expected to be very important.

Thermodynamic, electron spin resonance and near field microscopy measurements of all samples will be performed in Orsay.
To sum up, it is expected that endohedral compounds will lead to harder materials than mixtures will do and moreover, as it is stressed above, the transport properties should be very different.
These studies should lead to publications in international journals and patentable findings may be encountered.
